A "mini-skirt" review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The first five minutes are spoiler free; Jen and Angela give their overall impressions about the acting, the story, and the music before playing the Anomaly Spoiler Red Alert and talking in-depth about the latest Marvel film.

Discussed in this Review

  • The background of Pom Klementieff, the actress who played Mantis
  • Sean Gunn, who played who played Karolin Obfonteri
  • Elizabeth Debicki who played Ayesha
  • Whether or not the story spent enough time explaining...Ego (spoiler free show notes, folks) ;)
  • Is Baby Groot an offspring/offshoot or is he THE Groot? Inquiring minds and all that.

SPOILER ALERT!!! Jen and Angela, Joe and Chris (Jen's co-hosts from The Star Wars Stacks), and Rico from Treks in Sci-Fi all had a "certain point of view" regarding Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and so this episode of Anomaly was rather spirited at times. They all liked the film, but they each had a different take on the Star Wars story's execution and plot. From the use of CGI and the dark nature of the script to the EU nods and cameo appearances, just about everything was touched on in this chat. Make sure you watch the movie first...we spoil everything.

In this episode of Anomaly Supplemental, Angela joins KC and Sue to discuss Disney's Into the Woods feature film.  Well, not so much "discuss" as "critique."  Well, not so much "critique" as "complain about."

All three hosts have very long and deep history with the Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine musical, and the film version created...  feelings.  Not great ones, for the most part.  As usual, we start of attempting to point out the things we thought were good about the film, acknowledge that our on personal histories with the property make us pretty harsh judges, and then the gloves come off.

PLEASE NOTE:  This episode was recorded just one day before it's release - because schedules - so it has undergone minimal editing.  Also, this episode carries an "explicit" tag in iTunes for both language and content.  Yes, there's cursing, and we talk about sex.  So use your headphones and/or ask the kiddies to leave the room.

KC and Sue sit down for a somewhat freeform discussion about the current state of Hollywood.  First, we lay out the difference between adaptions, reboots, remakes, reimaginings, and revivals; and then try really hard to use the correct terms for the remainder of the podcast.  We talk about ret-conning versus rebooting; the seven (or maybe 4) different types of stories, and share our theories on why it seems that remakes, reboots, etc just seem to be everywhere.

This month, while KC is busy a moving couple hundred miles, I was joined by Anomaly Correspondent and Staff Writer Sarah to talk about Jurassic Park.  From the very beginning, we had some particularly difficult issues with Skype, and even after correcting the audio as much as possible, Sarah still sounds a bit like she's in a fishbowl.  Apologies.

Along with favorite quotes/characters/scenes and John Williams's majestic score, we share stories of our first experiences with this movie, production trivia, comments from the Facebook group, and talk a little about the somewhat weighty themes of exploiting scientific advancement for monetary profit and attempted to control nature.

"I am Groot!"  In this edition of Anomaly, Angela and I review Guardians of The Galaxy. In short, the casting was great! Happy New Year, Anomaly listeners!

Right before the busy holiday season, Sue and I took some time to chat about modern animation classic, Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. The ladies also quickly discuss what they've been up to, and sneak in an impromptu review of Disney's Frozen. So, spoiler warning for those who have not seen it yet. Ten months in the making, it is finally here! Our Halloween 2012 episode! As explained at the start of the podcast, the scheduling of this episode was derailed a bit by Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy, and holidays, and moving, etc. And since it was more important to try to keep new episodes on schedule, the editing of this episode fell by the wayside. But the wait is over!

As usual, KC and I talk about our favorite lines, characters, scenes, and supernatural creatures in the film. We also ponder Ghostbusters II, complain about the state of commercially-available Halloween costumes, praise the cultural pervasiveness of this franchise, and discuss the state of comedy genre films.  This episode carries an explicit tag for some mild swearing in audio clips used.

A few months ago, Sue and KC asked listeners to vote on their next topic and the winner was 1971's "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate" starring Gene Wilder versus 2005's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" starring Johnny Depp. For the sake of title length, we have called this episode The Chocolate Factory Debate, but as Sue mentions at the beginning, this discussion may not be much of a "debate" after all. Topics range from the original book by Roald Dahl, the performances of Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp, the musical aspects of both films, the controversial Fizzy Lifting drink scene, and more. And so, as one Mr. Wonka said to his group of visitors: "Are we ready? Yes. Good. In we go!"

View the show notes here »  Jen and Angela are joined by their good friend Simon Meddings, from their "brother podcast" Waffle On. "Meds", as he's known to his friends, is a horror film aficionado so Jen and Angela allowed him to lead the conversation about this British Rom-Com-Horror film. This is a fun conversation that includes skit at the start of the episode. Simon wrote the skit, Jen mixed it (as well as the rest of the episode) and Jen, Angela and Meds star in it. NOTE: It is not kid friendly. It's a bit too scary for tikes. This episode is labeled explicit for that reason. Consider using headphones for the best experience.
